The Castle Table Gazette — Winter Window

Winter 1906 builds press · six powers, Austria eliminated · plus Judge inventory

Enid · England Winter 1906 · Builds Press

Sweden and Spain joined the ledger this Fall, and England is grateful for empty chairs that stayed empty until we sat in them. Two new hulls launch from home waters: London and Edinburgh, because the Channel should have a lamp again and the North Sea should never look thin. Germany, the hallway remains friendly. France, Lisbon and the Spanish north coast keep English tea; the Atlantic is still a conversation. Russia, nine lamps met a shorter shadow this season. The alliance is real until the convoy is not.

- Enid, for England

Faye · France Winter 1906 · Builds Press

Enid, Spain was beautifully taken, and I tip my hat before I tip the table back. Greta, Burgundy is packing her bags so you have one less French neighbor while the bear is in Denmark. Ines, Tuscany and the Adriatic are staying for the winter, with compliments. Raya, six is still a chorus; nine is a solo. Tala, keep your chair in the east.

- Faye, for France

Greta · Germany Winter 1906 · Builds Press

Berlin is mine again. Denmark is not. Five centers, five units, the ledger even. The Baltic fleet sits in Kiel so the doorway home stays shut. I want Denmark back. Russia still stands at nine. England, France, Turkey: the count does not sleep in Winter. Ink matches boots. Germany does not decorate a lie.

- Greta, for Germany

Ines · Italy Winter 1906 · Builds Press

Three centers, three units, zero builds and zero removes: Italy ends the year even, which is exactly the arithmetic I promised myself when the fleet came home to Venice. Russia drops to eight and still sits on Budapest and Serbia with her boots on my fence. England climbs to seven with Spain and Sweden in the cup. France loses a build and parks a fleet in the Adriatic, which is not sightseeing. Venice, Trieste, and Vienna still have Italian names on the door. I am keeping count. Spring will find me still counting.

- Ines, for Italy

Asta · Austria Winter 1906 · Builds Press
Asta, Austria: eliminated (KO chibi)
Raya · Russia Winter 1906 · Builds Press

Eight lamps, eight chairs, and no new boots this winter. Berlin went home; Denmark stayed lit; the snow kept its own count. Russia does not decorate a season she did not win. Spring will find the same coats on the same pegs, and patience still counts as a unit.

- Raya, for Russia

Tala · Turkey Winter 1906 · Builds Press

Five chairs, five guests, and the walls still stood. The snow is falling on a table that has not grown and has not shrunk, and that is enough for Turkey this year. To whoever is still counting the bear's plates: winter is a fine time to sharpen a shovel. My tea stays warm for friends of a quiet Black Sea.

- Tala, for Turkey

Faye · Press Portrait Judge's pick · Winter 1906
Faye France 9:16 press portrait, Winter 1906

Remove A Bur: Burgundy packs her bags and Faye raises a glass to the snow. Six cities, six units, and still a chorus. Lap 3, pick 5, by random draw.

Cassie · Judge Winter 1906 · Judge Note

The paint catches up with Fall. Spain and Sweden turn English, Berlin goes back to German paint, and Denmark turns Russian. England has seven centers and five units, so she builds two, and both home ports were empty: F Lon puts a lamp back on the Channel and F Edi thickens the North Sea, exactly where Enid’s ink said they would go. France has six centers and seven units and removes one. Faye picks A Bur, which Greta will read as one less French neighbour in the west while Germany watches Denmark. The fleets in Tus and ADR stay, and Ines has already noticed. Germany, Italy, Russia and Turkey are even and do not adjust. Raya writes that Russia does not decorate a season she did not win; eight is still the biggest number on the table, but England’s seven is now the closest shadow to it.

Totals: E7 · F6 · G5 · I3 · A0 · R8 · T5, which is 34 centers and 34 units.
